{"id":3980,"date":"2019-02-28T15:35:05","date_gmt":"2019-02-28T15:35:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/a-o.catalystdna.com\/march\/?p=3980"},"modified":"2020-02-23T01:13:14","modified_gmt":"2020-02-23T01:13:14","slug":"age-opportunitys-go-for-life-programme-announces-sports-grants-of-e300000","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ageandopportunity.ie\/age-opportunitys-go-for-life-programme-announces-sports-grants-of-e300000\/","title":{"rendered":"Sports grants of \u20ac300,000 to get more older people active"},"content":{"rendered":"<!--themify_builder_content-->\n<div id=\"themify_builder_content-3980\" data-postid=\"3980\" class=\"themify_builder_content themify_builder_content-3980 themify_builder tf_clear\">\n                    <div  data-lazy=\"1\" class=\"module_row themify_builder_row tb_463ce72 tb_first tf_w\">\n                        <div class=\"row_inner col_align_top tb_col_count_1 tf_box tf_rel\">\n                        <div  data-lazy=\"1\" class=\"module_column tb-column col-full tb_be6dc46 first\">\n                    <!-- module image -->\n<div  class=\"module module-image tb_ff5f33d image-top   auto_fullwidth tf_mw\" data-lazy=\"1\">\n        <div class=\"image-wrap tf_rel tf_mw\">\n            <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ageandopportunity.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/CL1-1024x683.jpg\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" alt=\"Go for Life Grants Launch with John Treacy, CEO of Sport Ireland\">    \n        <\/div>\n    <!-- \/image-wrap -->\n    \n        <\/div>\n<!-- \/module image --><!-- module box -->\n<div  class=\"module module-box tb_daa417f \" data-lazy=\"1\">\n    <div class=\"module-box-content ui  tb_default_color\">\n                <div class=\"tb_text_wrap\"><ul>\n<li><strong>Grants awarded to clubs nationwide in the promotion of activity in older people<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u20ac5.7m awarded to date by the National Grant Scheme<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>1,028 grants allocated under 2018 programme<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>30,000 older people to benefit from investment<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The \u2018Go for Life\u2019 National Grant Scheme is today (November 28<sup>th<\/sup>) celebrating a momentous allocation of funding for sporting activities in older age-groups.<\/p>\n<p>The grants scheme, a combined initiative from <strong>Age &amp; Opportunity and Sport Ireland<\/strong>, will distribute almost \u20ac300,000 across 1,028 groups.<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s allocation brings the total grants allocated over the last 18 years to over 14,000 and the total fund allocated to date is \u20ac5.7 million.<\/p>\n<p>The National Grant Scheme is widely recognised for its positive endeavours and encouragement of activity among older people<strong><em>. <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>Brendan Griffin, Minister of State<\/em><\/strong> with responsibility for Sport, said the funding has not only supported older people, but empowered their age group to get more active more often.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese allocations enable groups across Ireland to achieve activity goals for thousands of older people,\u201d he said. \u201cProgrammes like \u2018Go for Life\u2019 are a great way to bring the National Physical Activity Plan into people\u2019s lives. They provide an accessible and enjoyable means for older people in communities nationwide to reap the health rewards from doing physical activity. I am delighted to see that almost \u20ac300,000 has been allocated by Sport Ireland to the Go for Life grants to over one thousand groups this year.\u00a0 This means that 30,000 older people will take part in sport and physical activity as a direct result of this grant scheme. \u00a0This scheme is a wonderful way of promoting increased participation for older people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the launch, <strong><em>John Treacy, Chief Executive of Sport Ireland<\/em><\/strong>, said the \u2018Go for Life\u2019 initiative continues to power ahead as a valuable resource in getting more older people active.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>We never cease to be amazed by the popularity and enthusiasm for the \u2018Go for Life\u2019 programme,\u201d he said. \u201cSport Ireland, along with our partner Age &amp; Opportunity work tirelessly to deliver opportunities and grants to as many deserving clubs and groups as is possible. There has never been a greater focus on being active and understanding the benefit of keeping fit, and \u2018Go for Life\u2019 is indicative of that appetite in older age-groups.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The number of people who will take part in activities funded by the 2018 grant scheme is over 30,000.\u00a0 The investment provided by the grant will be subsidised by over 77% of groups and participants. The number of grants allocated exceeds 1000 for the sixth time and the percentage of successful applicants is 92%.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Karen Smyth, CEO of Age &amp; Opportunity<\/em><\/strong>, said today\u2019s funding was an important milestone in keeping older age groups healthy and active. She said the allocation of grants ensured clubs and groups from all walks of life could benefit from the scheme<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>This year, 309 successful applications were from designated disadvantaged areas and 96 were from applicants who had not previously received a grant&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>We are delighted to work on this in partnership with Sport Ireland and long may this collaboration continue. Age &amp; Opportunity puts the value that older people bring to our society at the top of its agenda, and today\u2019s announcement is further evidence of paying tribute to older generation.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Of today\u2019s successful funding allocations, 205 grants were awarded to Active Retirement Associations, 268 grants were awarded to Irish Countrywomen\u2019s Associations and 23 applications were made by Local Sports Partnerships.<\/p>\n<p>Other funding allocations included: 24 Mens Sheds\u2019 groups; seven Rehab Care groups; 11 Arthritis Ireland initiatives; 10 Irish Wheelchair Association groups; and activities for 32 Family Resource Centres.<\/p>\n<p>The Grant Scheme demonstrates the wide scope and ambition of Ireland\u2019s older generations where keeping healthy and active is concerned.
